A New Milestone in Modern Health’s Growth in California

California is home to many of our largest and most complex employer partners. As expectations around mental health care continue to evolve—especially in highly regulated markets—Modern Health has taken an important step to meet those expectations with clarity and confidence.

Modern Health is pleased to share that we have received our Knox-Keene Health Care Service Plan Act license in the state of California. We pursued Knox-Keene licensure to ensure that our care model continues to meet the highest bar for safety, quality, and compliance—not only today, but as we scale and innovate for the future.

The license is issued and overseen by the Department of Managed Health Care (DMHC), which administers one of the strongest consumer-protection frameworks in the country. The Knox-Keene Act sets comprehensive standards across financial stability, clinical operations, member communications, timeliness of care, and quality assurance to ensure that Californians receive reliable, high-quality support.

“Receiving the Knox-Keene license reflects the rigorous standards we hold ourselves to as an organization,” said Erin Brown, General Counsel at Modern Health. “California has one of the most comprehensive regulatory frameworks in the country, and meeting these requirements reinforces our commitment to operating with transparency, integrity, and unwavering focus on member protection.”

Why This Matters for Employers and Employees

For California-based employers, the Knox-Keene license strengthens confidence that the mental health support delivered through Modern Health adheres to the DMHC’s comprehensive regulatory expectations.

For members, the license reinforces essential safeguards—such as robust quality assurance processes, clear grievance pathways, and systems designed to promote equitable, timely access to care.

The licensure also supports our ability to expand and enhance how behavioral health services are delivered in California. It helps ensure greater continuity across care touchpoints, creating a more seamless experience for employees who rely on Modern Health for support.

This milestone formalizes the high standards that have long guided Modern Health’s approach and positions our care model for sustainable, long-term growth in one of our most important markets.

    Our Ongoing Commitment

Achieving the Knox-Keene license underscores our deep commitment to making mental health a strength and priority for all.

As workplace needs continue to evolve, Modern Health remains focused on ensuring that every member receives high-quality and dependable support. The Knox-Keene license is one of many steps we’re taking to deliver care that is accessible, effective, and trusted by employers and employees across the state.
